Inspired by Canadian John McCrae's poem "In Flanders Fields," the early lapel Poppy — a handcrafted fabric bloom worn in the aftermath of the First World War — took root as an emblem of grief and gratitude, quickly growing into a national act of Remembrance.
Carried forward by The Royal Canadian Legion since its incorporation in 1926, the Poppy endures as a living promise. On this fine silver coin, a red cloth lapel Poppy from the 1920s is joined by the Legion's motto "MEMORIAM EORUM RETINEBIMUS" ("We Will Remember Them") and set before a field of blooming poppies — marking the Legion's 100th anniversary in 2026.
