Du ciel jusqu’à la mer – succédant à la pièce Le chasseur (2024), cette pièce de 2 oz en argent pur à 99,99 % plonge au cœur des eaux froides du Pacifique, offrant une représentation inoubliable de l’Épaulard, gardien de l’océan. Le motif stylisé au placage d’or sélectif, œuvre de l’artiste kwakiutl Jason Hunt, rappelle un panneau de cèdre sculpté à la main et est rehaussé d’un champ gravé imitant le grain du bois et d’un cordon en forme de corde sur les deux côtés. Au revers, les formes expressives et les lignes fluides représentent le chaos des vagues provoqué par l’Épaulard chassant le Saumon au clair de lune. Il s’agit d’un sublime hommage à l’esprit gardien, symbole traditionnel de force et des liens familiaux, ainsi que d’une superbe représentation de la culture des Kwakwaka’wakw.

Caractéristiques particulières

·         Un splendide hommage à l’esprit gardien. Succédant à la pièce Le chasseur (2024), cette pièce millésimée 2025 poursuit la célébration de l’art kwakwaka’wakw et de la tradition sculpturale des Kwakiutl tout en rendant hommage à l’Épaulard, gardien de l’océan.

·         Un motif stylisé évoquant les panneaux de bois kwakiutl. Frappée dans 2 oz d’argent pur à 99,99 %, cette pièce au motif stylisé évoquant les panneaux de bois kwakiutl sculptés à la main est rehaussée d’un placage d’or sélectif, mettant en valeur les contours prononcés distinctifs du style artistique de la côte du Nord-Ouest.

·         Une bordure de corde. Pour la pièce Le chasseur (2024), nous avions exploité le processus de frappe à son maximum en ajoutant un cordon décoratif – une bordure en forme de corde d’écorce de cèdre – des deux côtés de la pièce. On retrouve ce même cordon sur la pièce de 2025.

·         Imite le grain du bois. La touche finale : au revers et à l’avers, la pièce est rehaussée d’un champ gravé imitant le grain du bois.

·         L’art narratif autochtone mis en lumière. Riche, varié et hautement symbolique, l’art autochtone sous toutes ses formes est une représentation visuelle des traditions qui se transmettent d’une génération à l’autre.

·         Un fier héritage artistique. L’artiste Jason Hunt est issu d’une longue lignée de sculpteurs et d’artistes kwakiutl de renommée internationale qui ont joué un rôle déterminant dans la survie et la résurgence de l’art kwakiutl.

·         Un certificat numéroté. La Monnaie royale canadienne certifie l’authenticité de toutes ses pièces de collection.

MOTIF

Le motif au revers, œuvre de l’artiste kwakiutl Jason Hunt, représente l’Épaulard, gardien de l’océan, chassant le Saumon au clair de lune, rendu dans le style aux contours prononcés de la côte du Nord-Ouest. Pour imiter l’aspect d’un panneau de bois sculpté kwakiutl portant une bordure en corde d’écorce de cèdre, le revers et l’avers présentent tous deux un champ gravé imitant le grain du bois et un cordon en forme de corde. L’avers est à l’effigie de Sa Majesté le roi Charles III, selon l’artiste canadien Steven Rosati.

LE SAVIEZ-VOUS?

D’origine kwakiutl, l’artiste Jason Hunt est issu d’une longue lignée de sculpteurs et d’artistes de renommée internationale :

« Il y a quelques années, mes œuvres ont été exposées aux côtés de celles de mon grand-père, Henry Hunt, et de mon père, Stanly Clifford Hunt. Sur le chemin du retour, mon père et moi avons dû nous mettre en quarantaine chez moi. Nous nous sommes assis au bord de l’eau et avons discuté de l’exposition. Presque instantanément, un épaulard est apparu, et il est revenu nous voir plusieurs fois dans les jours qui ont suivi. Je crois que c’était mon grand-père, qui venait participer à la conversation. Je n’oublierai jamais cette expérience, qui représente ce que l’Épaulard symbolise pour moi. » – Jason Hunt, artiste

DESIGN

Designed by Kwakiutl artist Jason Hunt and rendered in the Northwest Coast formline style, the reverse depicts the Orca, guardian of the sea, hunting the Salmon by the light of the moon. To mimic the look of a carved Kwakiutl wood panel framed by cedar bark rope, the reverse and obverse both feature an engraved woodgrain texture and a rope along the rim. The obverse features the effigy of His Majesty King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.

Artist Jason Hunt is of Kwaguilth descent and comes from a long line of internationally renowned Kwakiutl carvers and artists:

“A few years ago, I was part of an exhibition that included works by my grandfather, Henry Hunt, and my father, Stanley Clifford Hunt. When my father and I travelled home, we had to quarantine at my place, and as we sat and looked out on the water, we started talking about the exhibition. Almost instantly, an orca appeared and visited us for the next few days. I like to think it was my grandfather coming by to be a part of the conversation.
